The winter this year in Toronto simply won’t end. It was snowing the other day. Today I could hardly walk down the street the wind was so strong. And it really got me thinking. It’s hard to get motivated at the best of times but after 6 months of solid winter, it’s neigh on impossible. And yet the spring time is the perfect time to get your business back into shape.

Spring is a great time because it is a quiet time, the light is very bright but the weather is not too hot or too cold, and it’s the beginning of the year – so a fresh start if you will.

The problem with Spring however is that is comes immediately after the holiday season, immediately after the most expensive time with utility bills and… it’s tax time – most people are watching their pennies – and rightly so.

But it really is important to understand how much our environments affect our emotional and physical health.

Organized employees are perceived as more productive, according to a 2010 survey of 500 human resource managers by Office Team. 83% of respondents said the appearance of an employee’s workspace affects their perception somewhat of that person’s professionalism.

Stress levels have almost doubled in the workforce in Canada. (13% in 1991 up to 27% in 2001 – HRSDC 2001).

In an economic climate where sales are slow or declining, companies often downsize their employee base and/or the office space itself, resulting in smaller personal workstations and heavier individual workloads. Employees do essential work first and low priority tasks such as filing, purging and desk organizing are put on the back burner for “when I get time”. This ultimately creates offices that look more cluttered than ever before and decreases employee productivity.
